Think back to a wedding day. The bride spends hours getting ready. There is the dress, the hair, the flowers, and a team of bridesmaids making sure every detail is right.

The groom gets ready too. Guys, be honest. You never smelled better than you did on your wedding day.

But here is a question. Did your spouse show up that day because you dressed up?

Of course not. They showed up because they loved you. And you got ready because you loved them.

That difference matters more than we think. It is the difference between earning something and preparing to receive it.

Many of us treat our walk with God like a transaction. If I read enough, pray enough, and behave well enough, then God will come through for me. And when life gets hard, we start wondering what we did wrong or what we still need to pay.

Scripture: Joshua 3:5 — “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.”

On the day before the crossing, Joshua gave the people an instruction. Consecrate yourselves.

The word simply means to be holy or set apart. It means to focus your heart on God and be mindful of what you let into your mind and your life.

Notice what Joshua did not say. He did not say, “If you consecrate yourselves well enough, the Lord will do wonders.” The wonder was already decided. Tomorrow the Lord would stop the river. The people were being invited to be ready for it.

Consecration is not the cost of the miracle. It is how we prepare to experience the full weight of it.

The same is true for us. God has already determined to do the greatest miracle. He has given us Jesus Christ and saved us by his grace. We do not set ourselves apart to earn that. We set ourselves apart because we love the One who gave it.

I have noticed something in my own life. The times I am most confused about a decision are usually the times I have drifted far from the Lord. I am doing things my way and saying things I shouldn’t say. It all becomes noise. And that white noise drowns out the still small voice of God.

Consecration turns down the noise. It clears space to hear him. It is how we get ready to follow when the ark starts to move.

It might mean turning off the phone a little earlier tonight. It might mean an honest prayer of confession, or setting aside whatever has been crowding him out. None of that buys the miracle. It simply gets you ready to see it.

So this is not a call to work harder for God’s approval. It is a call to get ready for a God who already loves you and is already on the move.

Reflect: What noise in your life is drowning out God’s voice right now? What is one way you can set your heart apart for him today?
